THE CARIBBEAN VEGAN
Born in the island of Barbados, Taymer Mason grew up in a family of home cooks who taught her to make—and love!—traditional Caribbean cuisine. She became a vegan while attending the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, and after graduating, moved to France where she started veganizing old West Indian favorites.
Mason is a food scientist and organic cosmetic developer of a natural hair and skin line that was launched in 2017. She is the author of Caribbean Vegan, Caribbean Smoothies and Kink Alchemy, a natural hair book. The bilingual globetrotter currently lives in Toronto Canada and has received accolades and plaudits for her books including being one of Amazon’s Best Books of the Month in Cookbooks, Food & Wine. According to Veg News, “Mason’s herbaceous sauces, savory dry rubs, and piquant spices have elevated our everyday ingredients into unforgettable, island-inspired dishes.”

After switching to a plant-based diet for health reasons, Desiree missed eating the Puerto Rican dishes her family would make that were delightful but not the healthiest. She wanted to help others create delicious plant-based meals without sacrificing the flavor so she created the food blog Rican Vegan. Desiree creates healthy plant-based versions of traditional Latin dishes for her blog and inspires more people to make the switch and experience the health benefits for themselves while enjoying flavorful food at the same time.
